Overnight diapering is one of the biggest challenges for moms.  No one
wants to change a diaper (or the sheets!) in the middle of the night.
That’s why, whether you use cloth or disposables, absorbency and fit are
key!

I have to be perfectly honest, despite all of the good experiences I
had with Bummis products – and all of things I had heard about the
Bummis Dimple Diaper, I did not jump to try this new overnight fitted
when it first came out.

Why?  For one, I thought I had
my night-time diapering sorted out.  And for two, I was more than a bit
hesitant to shell out almost $33 CAD for a single diaper.

Even
if I had seen this diaper in person, I probably wouldn’t have purchased
it.  To be quite honest, when I opened the package I was a bit
underwhelmed – the diaper seemed incredibly trim, and featured a single
layer soaker.  I couldn’t believe that this was the overnight diaper!

And
so, if it hadn’t been for winning one, I might have never even tried
it! But I’m so glad I did!  It’s an amazing little work-horse diaper for
us, and it gets us through the night with ease.  I decided to write
this review because I know how many people struggle with night-time
diapering, and I also know that you, too, may need a bit of encouragement to try this diaper.

Introduction

The Bummis Dimple Diaper is a fitted diaper made of
organic cotton inside and out.  Below are pictures of the inner and
outer of this diaper.  It features an absorbent core and a detached booster, both made of organic cotton.  It also features 3 rise settings and cross-over waist snaps to help adjust the diaper as your baby grows.

All Bummis diapers are made in their facility in Montreal, Canada, with textiles milled in Canada and the USA.

I didn’t find a lot of information on prepping this diaper.  I actually started using it for daytime after a single wash, and for night-time after two washes.  I have found the absorbency increased for the first few washes, but I was still successful with it overnight on the third wearing.

I do want to note that natural materials are more susceptible to staining than minky, microfiber, and microfleece. Stains can depend on a lot of factors.  Every baby is different, but my son has seldom had a bowel movement in his overnight diaper.  Even when he has, I’ve found that this diaper cleans up within a couple of washes – and even faster when placed in the sun.

How does it compare to other diapers?

This diaper is trimmer than every other night-time cloth diaper option I have seen, but just as absorbent.  I thought when I purchased this that it would fluff up considerably after the first few washes, but it has remained very trim.  You can see in the photo below just how thin the soaker is.  It’s amazing!

One of the major challenges I’ve faced with dedicated overnight diapers is that they tend to get stinky over time, thanks to the much more concentrated urine that they absorb all night long.  While I have only used this diaper for about 2 months, I haven’t found that to be the case with it yet.  Natural fibers tend to hold on to stinks much less than synthetics (including stay-dry fabrics, microfiber, and minky), so one can hope the Bummis overnight cloth diaper will remain stink-free.  Fingers crossed!

What do I love about this product?

Soft & Fluffy:  I have found that most fitted diapers I own get crunchy when air-dried.  Even though it is made of 100% organic cotton, the Bummis overnight cloth diaper stays soft even when line-dried.

Trimness:  I have tried my
fair share of fitted diapers, from the Cloth-Eez Workhorse to expensive
hand-made hybrid fitteds from Hyena Cart and Etsy makers.  The Bummis
Dimple Diaper is, especially for its’ level of absorbency, the trimmest
fitted I have ever owned.  The first time I used it, I thought that the
fact that my son was still dry in the morning was just a fluke.  I’ve
used it again and again, and it just keeps on working.  But when I look
at it, I still have a hard time believing that it can be used
successfully overnight
– it’s
just that trim.  The biggest plus is that, even with a wool cover over
top (I use Disana and Woolly Bottoms), I can still squish my son into a
sleeper in his regular size!  Hurray!

Quick Drying:  This diaper and the unattached soaker are always dry in one cycle in my dryer.  This is similar to some of the handmade hybrid fitted diapers I own that feature detachable snake-style soakers, but is much quicker than most of the fitteds I have purchased from cloth diaper retailers (Tots Bots, Eco-Posh, Cloth-Eez, Nicki’s Bamboo, etc).

Stay-Dry Layer – As he has gotten older, I’ve found that a stay-dry barrier has helped my son sleep better at night.  This was actually where some of my existing night-time diaper options started to fail – they didn’t have a stay-dry layer.  Bummis claims that the booster of this diaper features a stay-dry polyester layer on one side, and organic cotton on the other – and it seems to do the trick.  A side note:  I am a
bit confused by the labeling of this diaper, as it is labeled as 100%
cotton, and yet there is a polyester layer (which is NOT cotton).

Would I recommend them to a friend?

If you are struggling with night-time leaks, I would definitely suggest trying this diaper.

At over $30, this diaper is one of the more expensive options among the diapers available for sale in most on-line cloth diaper retailers.  That said, this diaper offers an unrivaled trimness (making it much more comfortable for babies to wear for 12 hour nights!) and is constructed of 100% organic materials – and to me, both features are worth a little bit extra.  In fact, the price is comparable or slightly less expensive than WAHM (work-at-home-mom) made hybrid fitteds, which seems about right since this diaper is also made domestically in Bummis production facility in Canada.
